Omar Abdullah Becomes First Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory

On October 16, Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Following his oath-taking ceremony, he received a guard of honor at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar.

After assuming office, Chief Minister Abdullah held his first meeting with secretaries from various departments. In a post on social media platform X, he announced his return with the words, “I’m back.”

In a move to ensure public convenience, CM Abdullah instructed the police to avoid creating “green corridors” or stopping traffic during his road movements. He emphasized minimizing public inconvenience and reducing the use of sirens. He also advised his cabinet colleagues to adopt the same approach, focusing on serving the people without causing disruptions.

The oath of office was administered by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Saxena at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar. The event was attended by prominent leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Omar Abdullah, who leads the National Conference-led government, has the support of other parties in the INDIA alliance and four independents. The NC-Congress alliance secured a majority in the assembly elections. Abdullah previously served as Chief Minister from 2009 to 2015.
