Omar Abdullah Becomes First Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory

On October 16, Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The ceremony took place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Saxena administered the oath of office.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Omar Abdullah on his new role. In a message on X, PM Modi expressed his best wishes and assured the central government’s support for the progress of Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah responded with gratitude, looking forward to working with the Prime Minister for an effective administration.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by prominent leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav, Prakash Karat, Supriya Sule, and K Kanimozhi. The NC-Congress alliance, led by Omar Abdullah, secured a majority in the assembly polls with support from the INDIA bloc and four independents.

Omar Abdullah previously served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2009 to 2015.
