On Wednesday, Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference, was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The ceremony took place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha administering the oath.

Sakina Itoo: The Only Woman Minister

Sakina Itoo, the sole woman minister in Omar Abdullah’s cabinet, expressed her commitment to meeting the expectations of the people. She acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “It is a very challenging job right now because people have a lot of expectations. But we will try to meet those expectations and work for the people as much as possible.”

Itoo highlighted the significant voter turnout, emphasizing that people reclaimed their democratic rights through voting. She noted the issues faced over the past decade, including suppressed voices, lack of development, and challenges in sectors like power, health, and employment.

Other Key Figures and Attendees

Alongside Omar Abdullah, several other ministers were sworn in, including National Conference MLAs Javed Ahmed Rana, Javid Ahmad Dar, Sakina Itoo, and Surinder Kumar Chowdhary. Independent MLA Satish Sharma also joined the cabinet.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by prominent figures such as Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and leaders from the INDIA Bloc, including Akhilesh Yadav, Prakash Karat, Supriya Sule, Kanimozhi, Sanjay Singh, and D Raja. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti was also present.

The Congress-National Conference alliance secured 48 seats in the Jammu Kashmir assembly elections, with the NC winning 42 and Congress six seats.
