Omar Abdullah Becomes First Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Omar Abdullah on becoming the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi expressed his support for working closely with Omar and his team for the region’s progress.
Omar Abdullah took the oath of office at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar, administered by L-G Manoj Saxena. Omar acknowledged the challenges of being a Chief Minister in a Union Territory and expressed hope for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Alongside Omar, several ministers were sworn in, including National Conference MLAs Javed Ahmed Rana, Javid Ahmad Dar, Sakina Itoo, and Surinder Kumar Chowdhary, as well as Independent MLA Satish Sharma. This marks the first elected government in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 and its reorganization into Union Territories.
The Congress-National Conference alliance secured 48 seats in the assembly elections, paving the way for this new government after the revocation of presidential rule, which had been in place since 2018.
