Om Birla Meets PM Modi as BJP and Opposition Nominate Candidates for Lok Sabha Speaker

Om Birla, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance nominee for the Speaker post of the Lok Sabha, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament House. The opposition INDIA bloc has nominated Congress MP K Suresh for the Speaker’s post after failing to reach a consensus with the BJP.

Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, mentioned that the opposition would support the BJP’s candidate if the Deputy Speaker position is given to them. He also criticized the treatment of opposition leaders, alleging disrespect.

BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab is currently serving as the pro-tem speaker. The elections for the Speaker’s post will be held on June 26. The BJP holds a clear majority in the Lok Sabha with 293 MPs, while the opposition INDIA bloc comprises 234 MPs.
