Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha after a voice vote, defeating INDIA bloc candidate K Suresh. This marks Birla’s second term as Speaker, having previously served in the 17th Lok Sabha.

Responsibilities and Aspirations

Birla emphasized the responsibility of the new Lok Sabha to meet the people’s expectations. He stated, “The NDA government has been formed for the third consecutive term under the leadership of PM Modi. In the last decade, the expectations, hopes, and aspirations of the people have increased. Therefore, it becomes our responsibility to make collective efforts to fulfill their expectations and aspirations effectively.”

Condemnation of 1975 Emergency

In his address, Birla condemned the 1975 Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, calling it a “black chapter” in India’s history. He praised those who opposed the Emergency and fought to protect India’s democracy. The Lok Sabha observed a two-minute silence for those who lost their lives during this period.

Fair Elections

Birla also expressed gratitude to the Election Commission for conducting fair and transparent elections, ensuring that even remote areas were able to cast their votes. He noted that over 64 crore voters participated in the elections with great enthusiasm.

Adjournment

Despite Birla’s speech, opposition parties continued to protest, leading to the adjournment of the Lok Sabha until June 27.
