Olympian Bajrang Punia Receives Threat After Joining Congress
Olympian Bajrang Punia, who recently joined the Congress and was appointed as the working President of the Kisan Congress, received a threatening WhatsApp message on Sunday. The message, which came from a foreign number, warned him to quit Congress immediately or face dire consequences for himself and his family.
Punia lodged a formal complaint at the Bahalgarh police station in Sonipat district. Sonipat Superintendent of Police Ravindra Singh confirmed the complaint and stated that legal action is underway to investigate the threat.
Earlier, Punia criticized the BJP, claiming that if he and fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat had joined the BJP, they would have been hailed as ‘patriots’ instead of being labeled ‘anti-nationals’ for joining the opposition. Punia expressed his commitment to raising farmers’ concerns, given his background as a farmer’s son.
On Friday, both Punia and Phogat joined Congress ahead of the Haryana Assembly Elections. Phogat was fielded as a party candidate from the Julana Assembly Constituency, while Punia was appointed as the working president of the All India Kisan Congress. Both wrestlers resigned from their positions in Northern Railways on the same day.
The Haryana Assembly Elections will be held on October 5, with the last date for filing nominations on September 12. The counting of votes will take place on October 8.
