The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has directed Ola to offer a more consumer-friendly refund policy. Now, customers can choose to receive refunds directly to their bank accounts or as coupons. This change, announced by CCPA’s Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare, aims to enhance consumer rights and service transparency.

Previously, Ola’s “no-questions-asked” refund policy only provided coupon codes for future rides, which could pressure consumers to book more rides instead of offering a direct refund. The CCPA emphasized that a fair refund policy should empower consumers with choices rather than push them to use services again.

Additionally, the CCPA criticized Ola’s policy of not providing invoices for auto rides, labeling it an “unfair trade practice” under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Ola has since made several changes to improve transparency and consumer trust. These include displaying grievance officer details, showing ride cancellation policies at booking, and providing clear fare information.

Ola has also improved the driver experience by encouraging digital payments and timely payment cycles. These changes come after 2,061 complaints were filed against Ola from January to October 2024, addressing issues like higher fares, non-refunds, and incorrect ride details.
