Odisha Prepares for Cyclone Dana
Health Services and Government Ready
A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a severe cyclonic storm named ‘Dana’ by October 23. This storm is predicted to reach the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal by Thursday, bringing heavy rains until Friday.
Health Services Preparedness
Bijay Kumar Mohapatra, the Director of Health Services in Odisha, assured that the health department is fully prepared to handle the cyclone’s impact. He stated that all service providers will be available, and no leave will be granted. The department is ensuring the supply of necessary drugs, including anti-venom for snake bites, and is providing safe drinking water and 24-hour electricity.
Mohapatra also mentioned that the department is monitoring potential diarrhoea cases due to waterlogging after the cyclone.
Government’s Assurance
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized that the government aims for zero casualties and is fully prepared. Vulnerable areas will be evacuated, and teams from NDRF, ODRAF, and Fire Services are on standby. Cyclone shelters will be equipped with essential supplies, and efforts are in place for the quick restoration of power, water, and communication services.
Police Readiness
Odisha Director General of Police Sudhansu Sekhar Sadangi confirmed that the police are ready to respond to the cyclone’s impact, whether it affects Bangladesh or Odisha.
