Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Verifying Bangladeshi Nationals Amid Political Turmoil

Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan announced that the process to verify the identities of Bangladeshi nationals entering Odisha will begin soon. This decision comes in response to the political turmoil in Bangladesh, which has led to an influx of people coming to Odisha through West Bengal.

Harichandan stated, “A lot of people are coming to our nation and Odisha through West Bengal. The process to verify the identities of Bangladeshi nationals who are coming to Odisha will start very soon. We have already alerted our coastal security.”

He also mentioned that the Odisha Chief Minister has reviewed the situation and that all marine police stations have been sensitised following the political unrest in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, thousands of Canadians staged a protest in downtown Toronto to stand in solidarity against the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. The protesters urged the Canadian Government to press the Dhaka Government to protect Hindus in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is currently experiencing a fluid political situation. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 amid mounting protests, which were initially led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs but later turned into anti-government protests.

Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on August 8, three days after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Seventeen members of the interim government took their oath at a ceremony in Dhaka, with Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus, 84, being sworn in as the chief advisor, a role equivalent to Prime Minister. Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Yunus.
