Odisha CM Orders Inquiry into Police Violence Against Army Captain and Fiancee

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered a judicial inquiry into the alleged police violence against an Army Captain and his fiancee at Bharatpur Police Station in Bhubaneswar. The inquiry will be conducted by Judge Justice Chittaranjan Das, and the report is expected within 60 days.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated that the High Court has been requested to expedite the criminal investigation under its direct supervision. The CMO emphasized the importance of the rule of law and respect for the Indian Army.

The police officers involved in the incident have been suspended, and a case has been registered against them. The state government is committed to the dignity, safety, and rights of women.

The incident took place on September 15 when the Army Major and his fiancee went to the Bharatpur police station to file a complaint against some miscreants who had harassed them. Instead of addressing their concerns, the police allegedly tortured the Major and his fiancee, even sending her to jail without justification.

On Sunday, the District Court granted bail to all seven accused in the assault case. The arrested individuals are Rakesh Naik, Abhilash Sawant, Aman Kumar, Aditya Ranjan Behra, Akash Padhiyari, Harish Manta, and Ashish Kumar.
