On September 12, during the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting in St Petersburg, Russia, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting took place at the Konstantinovsky Palace, and the Russian Embassy in India shared pictures of the event.

Key Highlights of the Meeting

During their conversation, President Putin praised the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. He emphasized the importance of security issues in their bilateral relations and thanked India for maintaining dialogue in this area. President Putin also proposed a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 22, during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, to discuss the outcomes of their joint work and future prospects.

Ajit Doval conveyed gratitude from PM Modi and shared information about PM Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine. Earlier in the day, Doval also met with Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, to review progress in bilateral cooperation and discuss mutual interests.

BRICS and India-Russia Relations

Russia is holding the BRICS chairmanship for 2024. BRICS is a group of states including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with new members Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia joining in 2023. NSA Doval participated in the 13th BRICS NSA meeting in Johannesburg in July 2023.

In July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia and highlighted the importance of India-Russia relations for global stability and peace. He praised the strengthening of ties under President Putin’s leadership over the past 2.5 decades.
