NPPA Approves Price Increase for Essential Drugs
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) in India has decided to increase the ceiling prices of eleven essential drug formulations by 50%. This decision, made on October 8, aims to ensure the continued availability of these drugs for public health needs.
Reason for Price Increase
The NPPA’s decision was influenced by rising costs of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), production expenses, and exchange rate fluctuations. Many manufacturers have requested price revisions or considered discontinuing certain formulations due to unsustainable costs under current pricing regulations.
Drugs Affected
The price increase affects drugs used to treat conditions such as asthma, glaucoma, thalassemia, tuberculosis, and mental health disorders. These include Benzyl Penicillin, Atropine injection, Streptomycin powder, Salbutamol tablets and solution, Pilocarpine drops, Cefadroxil tablets, Desferrioxamine injection, and Lithium tablets.
