North East CSR Connect Launched by Minister Sukanta Majumdar in New Delhi
The two-day North East CSR Connect – Unlocking North East’s Potential, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), was launched in New Delhi. The event was inaugurated by Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
Key Highlights
Minister Sukanta Majumdar emphasized the Rs 10,000 crore UNNATI Scheme, which aims to bring investments into the North East region. He also mentioned that central ministries are dedicating 10% of their budget to the region through various schemes.
Majumdar highlighted the importance of the Chittagong port in Bangladesh for trade, positioning it as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
Speeches and Addresses
Chanchal Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region, stressed the need for additional resources and private funding to accelerate development. He suggested that state governments create a repository of investible projects to attract CSR investments.
R Mukundan, Vice President of CII and Managing Director of Tata Chemicals Limited, noted the evolution of CSR over the past decade, with a shift towards transparency and impact orientation.
Event Details
The event saw participation from North East state governments, central ministries, over 100 NGOs, and 80 corporates. A compendium was released, and an exhibition showcased social development projects.
CSR Regulations
According to Section 135 of the Companies Act 2013, companies with a certain turnover and profitability must spend 2% of their average net profit from the past three years on corporate social responsibility activities.
