Nityanand Rai Highlights India’s Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts at Asia-Pacific Conference
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, emphasized India’s dedication to reducing the impact of disasters at the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) 2024 in Manila, Philippines. The conference, themed “Surge to 2030: Enhancing ambition in Asia Pacific to accelerate disaster risk reduction,” was inaugurated by the President of the Philippines, Bongbong Marcos.
Rai led a high-level Indian delegation and highlighted India’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 10-point agenda for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). He discussed key priorities such as Early Warning Systems (EWS), Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and financial provisions for DRR. Rai mentioned the use of modern technologies like the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) and Cell Broadcast Systems, and the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC), which provides advisories to 25 Indian Ocean countries.
India’s leadership in promoting infrastructure resilience was also highlighted, with the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) now having 47 member countries. Rai noted India’s financial commitment to DRR, with the 15th Finance Commission allocating USD 30 billion for the National and State Disaster Risk Management Funds for 2021-2026.
