Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding recent attacks on engineers and contractors in Jalandhar and Ludhiana.

Details of the Incidents

Gadkari mentioned two incidents on the Delhi-Katra expressway projects. In Jalandhar, an engineer was brutally assaulted, and although an FIR was registered, Gadkari called for stronger action. In Ludhiana, miscreants attacked a project camp and threatened to burn it and its staff alive. Despite written requests, no FIR had been filed, and no arrests were made.

Gadkari’s Requests

Gadkari urged the state government to take immediate corrective measures, file FIRs, and take strong action against the perpetrators to prevent future incidents and restore confidence among NHAI officers and staff.

Potential Consequences

Gadkari warned that if the situation does not improve, NHAI might have to cancel or terminate eight other severely affected projects, totaling 293 km and costing 14,288 crore.

Response from Punjab Police

Punjab Inspector General of Police, Sukhchain Singh Gill, stated that the case is under CM review, an SIT has been formed, and an FIR has been registered. He assured that the law and order situation is under control and security will be provided if needed by NHAI.
