Nitin Gadkari Announces India’s Plans to Export Lithium-Ion Batteries and Boost EV Market

Union Minister of Road Transport Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that India will soon be able to export lithium-ion batteries. Speaking at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM’s) 64th convention in New Delhi, Gadkari expressed confidence in India’s growing capabilities in battery manufacturing.

He mentioned that companies like Adani, Tata, Maruti, LG, and Samsung are entering the lithium-ion battery business. Gadkari also highlighted the government’s successful policies in semiconductor manufacturing, predicting India will lead globally in this sector within a few years.

Gadkari projected that India’s electric vehicle (EV) market could grow to one crore units annually by 2030, creating five crore jobs and potentially reaching a market value of Rs 20 lakh crore. He urged the industry to focus on quality, better designs, and the latest technology to compete globally and boost exports.

To support this growth, the government is establishing a world-class testing agency in Pune with a sanctioned cost of Rs 450 crore. This facility will provide comprehensive services to the industry, enhancing research and development.

Gadkari also called on the automobile industry to support the government’s scrappage policy, which aims to promote the scrapping of old vehicles. He noted that vehicle manufacturers in the USA and Europe have increased sales by promoting such policies. He thanked the industry for offering a 3 percent discount to vehicle owners who scrap their old vehicles, which could reduce component costs by 20-40 percent.

In his remarks, Gadkari emphasized the automobile industry’s crucial role in achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of transforming India into a 5 trillion-dollar economy and the third largest economy globally. He stressed the importance of innovation and sustainable practices in the auto sector to reach a carbon-neutral status by 2070.
