Cashless Treatment Scheme for Road Accident Victims
Announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has introduced a new scheme to provide cashless treatment to victims of road accidents. This initiative is currently being piloted in Chandigarh and Assam.
Scheme Details
The scheme, developed by the Transport Ministry, aims to cover treatment costs for individuals involved in road accidents caused by motor vehicles. The program is implemented in collaboration with the National Health Authority (NHA).
Under this scheme, eligible victims receive Health Benefits Packages related to trauma and polytrauma care at empanelled hospitals under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). The coverage is up to a maximum of Rs. 1.5 lakh for a period of 7 days from the date of the accident.
Administration and Implementation
The scheme is administered under the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, established under section 164B of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The NHA, under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, is responsible for the program’s implementation, coordinating with local police, empanelled hospitals, State Health Agencies, the National Informatics Centre, and the General Insurance Council.
Minister Gadkari emphasized that the pilot program aims to reduce fatalities and improve treatment for road accident victims, regardless of where the accident occurs.
