Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan Win All-India Clash at Paris Paralympics
In the ongoing Paris Paralympics, the Indian mixed doubles para-badminton campaign began with an exciting all-India match. Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan emerged victorious over Suhas Yathiraj and Palak Kohli, winning 2-0 with scores of 21-14 and 21-17. The pair is in Group A and will play three matches in total during the group stage to secure a spot in the knockout rounds.
Earlier, India’s para-badminton campaign had a rocky start as Manasi Joshi and Mandeep Kaur lost their women’s singles SL3 Group Stage first-round matches. Manasi, a 2019 World Championships gold medalist, lost to Indonesia’s Qontiah Ikhitar Syakuroh despite winning the first game. Mandeep Kaur was defeated by Nigeria’s Mariam Eniola Bolaji in two straight games.
In women’s para-badminton, Palak Kohli, Thulasimathi Murugesan, Manisha Ramdass, and Nithya Sre will also be competing. This year, India has sent its largest Paralympics contingent ever, with 84 athletes across 12 sports, reflecting the country’s growing para-sports ecosystem. India’s participation in the Paris 2024 Paralympics aims to surpass its previous achievements from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where the Indian badminton team won four medals, contributing to a total of 19 medals for the country.
