Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, emphasized the need for reforms in Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) during the Fourth G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting. This meeting took place alongside the Annual Meetings 2024 in Washington DC.
G20’s Role in MDB Reforms
Sitharaman highlighted the G20’s crucial role in driving the reform agenda for MDBs. She noted that the G20, as major shareholders, has been actively engaged in this agenda across recent presidencies. The political momentum generated by the G20 is pushing MDBs to evolve their vision, adjust incentive structures, and enhance their operational and financial capacities.

Under India’s G20 Presidency, MDBs were encouraged to adapt to the changing global landscape by refining their approaches and increasing their financing capabilities. Sitharaman praised the Brazilian Presidency for continuing the work set at the Leaders’ Summit in Delhi and maintaining consistency with previous G20 Presidencies. She affirmed India’s commitment to collaborating with the upcoming South African Presidency to further advance the MDB reform agenda.
