Nirmala Sitharaman Highlights India’s Support to Neighbors
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman participated in a panel discussion titled ‘Bretton Woods Institutions at 80: Priorities for the Next Decade’ in Washington, DC. She emphasized India’s unconditional financial support to neighboring countries, often preceding the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Sitharaman noted India’s efforts in extending credit to African nations for infrastructure development, such as building institutions, bridges, and railway stations.
She expressed India’s commitment to assisting Global South countries, highlighting the cultural values and importance of these nations to India. Sitharaman refrained from disclosing specific financial details, underscoring the significance of these relationships.
Other notable participants in the discussion included Lawrence H Summers from Harvard University, Spain’s Minister of Economy Carlos Cuerpo, and Egypt’s Minister of Planning Rania A. Al Mashat.
During her visit to the US, Sitharaman will attend various meetings, including the Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank, and hold bilateral discussions with leaders from the UK, Switzerland, and Germany.
