Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently spoke with John J Hamre, President and CEO of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in Washington, DC. She highlighted India’s advancements in electrification, water accessibility, and economic empowerment.
Electrification Achievements
Sitharaman emphasized that every village in India now has electricity. In 2014, many villages, even those near state capitals, lacked basic infrastructure. She stated, “I don’t think any village in India is unelectrified today. Households have received the connections.”
Jal Jeevan Mission
The Finance Minister discussed the Jal Jeevan Mission, a program by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide tap water to every household. Previously, villages had one tap for all. Now, each house has its own connection, improving health and sanitation.

Sitharaman noted increased autonomy and financial support for municipalities. They receive a portion of central taxes and additional funds, enhancing their capacity to raise resources. She expressed confidence in India’s economic growth and appeal to global investors.
