Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the Vishnupad Temple in Gaya and the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, will be developed into world-class tourist destinations. This initiative will be modeled after the successful Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor.

Significance of the Temples

The Mahabodhi Temple Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in Bodh Gaya and is one of the four holy sites related to the life of Lord Buddha. The Vishnupad Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, was erected in 1787 by Queen Ahilyabai on the banks of the Phalgu river.

Additional Development Plans

Sitharaman also proposed comprehensive development initiatives for Rajgir and Nalanda in Bihar. Rajgir holds religious significance for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, while Nalanda is known for its ancient monastic and scholastic institution. The government will also support tourism development in Odisha, known for its temples, monuments, and natural beauty.
