Nikhil Kumaraswamy Chosen as NDA Candidate for Channapatna Bypoll

In Bengaluru, Karnataka, the Leader of Opposition, R Ashoka, has defended the NDA’s choice of Nikhil Kumaraswamy as their candidate for the Channapatna Assembly bypoll. He stated that Congress workers are unhappy because the INDIA bloc candidate, CP Yogeshwara, is not a true Congressman. Ashoka explained that the NDA initially offered the opportunity to Yogeshwara, but he declined, leading to the decision to field Kumaraswamy.

Nikhil Kumaraswamy, who is the JD(S) State Youth Unit President, will face CP Yogeshwara, who recently joined Congress after resigning as a BJP MLC. HD Kumaraswamy had previously defeated Yogeshwara in the 2018 and 2023 assembly polls from this seat. The seat became vacant after HD Kumaraswamy won from the Mandya parliamentary segment in the last Lok Sabha polls.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced the decision at a press conference, expressing confidence that the alliance would win all three seats in the upcoming bypolls. He emphasized the support from high command leaders and the determination to ensure Kumaraswamy’s victory.

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy added that the decision was made with the blessings of BS Yediyurappa and other leaders, and it was influenced by party workers’ pressure. Nikhil Kumaraswamy expressed his confidence in the Channapatna constituency and his commitment to working with local leaders and workers.

The first phase of voting will cover 47 Assembly constituencies and the Wayanad parliamentary seat in Kerala on November 13. The second phase will occur on November 20 for the Kedarnath Assembly constituency in Uttarakhand and the Nanded parliamentary seat in Maharashtra. The vote counting is scheduled for November 23.
