Global Chess League Day Two: Alaskan Knights Take the Lead
The second day of the Global Chess League season 2 in London was filled with excitement and fierce competition. The PBG Alaskan Knights emerged as the leaders, winning all three of their matches and earning nine match points. This achievement places them ahead of four other teams, each with three points, while the Ganges Grandmasters are at the bottom with zero points.
The Alaskan Knights had a remarkable day, first defeating the American Gambits 14-2 and then narrowly beating the Mumba Masters 8-5. They are followed by the Mumba Masters, Triveni Continental Kings, Alpine SG Pipers, and American Gambits, all with three match points from two matches. Unfortunately, the Ganges Grandmasters, led by former world champion Vishy Anand, have yet to win a match after two losses.
One of the day’s surprises was world number one Magnus Carlsen’s unexpected loss on time to Alireza Firouzja, despite being in a winning position. However, the standout player was Indian prodigy Nihal Sarin, whose crucial victory against the Mumba Masters solidified the Alaskan Knights’ lead.
In the final match at Friends House, the Alaskan Knights faced the upGrad Mumba Masters. Both teams had strong performances earlier, but the Knights prevailed. Anish Giri and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, as well as Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Peter Svidler, agreed to draws. Mumba’s Vidit Gujrathi had a chance to win against Nodirbek Abdusattorov but settled for a draw due to time pressure. The decisive moment came when Nihal Sarin defeated Raunak Sadhwani, securing an 8-5 victory for the Knights.
The league continues on Saturday with four matches starting at 1 PM BST in London.
