Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been awarded the Grand Commander of The Order of the Niger (GCON) by Nigeria, making him the second foreign dignitary to receive this honor after Queen Elizabeth in 1969. This marks the 17th international award for PM Modi. He arrived in Nigeria as part of a three-nation tour, warmly welcomed by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Minister for Federal Capital Territory, who presented him with the ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja. This gesture symbolizes the trust and honor from the people of Nigeria.
PM Modi’s visit aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria, focusing on democracy and pluralism. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years. India and Nigeria have a strong bilateral relationship, with India emerging as a development partner through concessional loans and training programs. Over 200 Indian companies have invested more than USD 27 billion in Nigeria, enhancing economic, energy, and defense collaborations. During his visit, PM Modi will hold discussions to further enhance these ties.
