Nicholas Pooran Breaks T20 Runs Record in 2024
Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago, September 28: West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran made history by breaking Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan’s world record for the most runs in T20s in a calendar year. Pooran achieved this milestone during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 game for Trinbago Knight Riders against Barbados Royals.
In the match, Pooran scored 27 runs off 15 balls, including four boundaries and a six, at a strike rate of 180.00. His performance, along with contributions from Kieron Pollard (42 runs), Keacy Carty (32 runs), and Andre Russell (31 runs), helped Trinbago Knight Riders reach 175/7. They successfully defended this total, restricting Barbados Royals to 145/9.
Pooran has amassed 2,059 runs in 66 matches this year, with an average of 42.02 and a strike rate of 160.85. He has hit 14 half-centuries, 139 fours, and 152 sixes. In CPL 2024, he has scored 312 runs in nine innings, with an average of 39.00 and a strike rate of 175.28.
Previously, Rizwan held the record with 2,036 runs in 48 T20s in 2021. Pooran’s notable performances this year include scoring 499 runs in IPL 2024, 228 runs in the T20 World Cup, and 709 runs in the International League T20 in UAE. He also performed well in SA20 2024, Major League Cricket in the USA, and The Hundred in the UK.
In 13 T20Is for West Indies, Pooran has scored 384 runs with a strike rate of over 157. He also surpassed Chris Gayle’s record of 135 sixes in a calendar year, becoming the first player to hit over 150 sixes in a year.
