Nicaragua Ends Diplomatic Relations with Israel
On October 11, Nicaragua, the largest country in Latin America, announced its decision to break diplomatic ties with Israel. This announcement was made by Vice President Rosario Murillo, who is also the wife of President Daniel Ortega. The decision follows a resolution passed by Nicaragua’s Congress, marking the one-year anniversary of the Gaza war.
Murillo stated that President Ortega instructed the government to sever relations with what he described as the “fascist and genocidal government of Israel.” This move is largely symbolic, as Israel does not have a resident ambassador in Nicaragua’s capital, Managua, and the relations between the two countries have been minimal.
Nicaragua joins other Latin American countries like Colombia, Chile, and Bolivia in cutting ties with Israel, reflecting a trend among nations with leftist ideologies to support the Palestinian cause. The Nicaraguan government condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and expressed concerns about the conflict extending to Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iran.
Earlier this year, Nicaragua attempted to halt German arms sales to Israel through the International Court of Justice, but the case was rejected. This recent move aligns with Nicaragua’s ongoing efforts to support peace in the Middle East.
