NIA Finds Live Bomb in Assam: Terror Plot by ULFA (I) Uncovered
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) discovered a live Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, officials said. The bomb was placed by ULFA (I) terrorists as part of a plan to disrupt Independence Day celebrations. It was defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad of Assam Police.
The NIA found the bomb during an investigation into a previous IED recovery by Assam Police on August 15. The state police acted after a video by Paresh Baruah, SS Commander-in-Chief of ULFA (I), called for a boycott of Independence Day and warned of consequences for disobedience.
The NIA, which took over the investigation on September 17, discovered that ULFA (I) leaders coordinated the placement of several IEDs to cause terror during Independence Day. Investigations revealed the involvement of Girish Baruah, also known as Gautam Baruah, and his associates in placing the IEDs. Baruah was arrested in Bengaluru on September 24 and disclosed the location of the live IED. He revealed that the IEDs were planted under the direction of Aishang Asom, also known as Abhiit Gogoi, and other top ULFA (I) leaders.
