The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has charged four individuals in connection with an ISIS radicalization and recruitment case in Tamil Nadu. This case is linked to the 2022 Coimbatore temple car bomb blast.

Who Are the Accused?

The accused are Jameel Basha, Mohammed Hussain, Irshath, and Syed Abdur Rahman. They have been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act).

Details of the Case

The chargesheet was filed by the NIA Chennai branch in August 2023. The investigation revealed that the accused were involved in recruiting youth for ISIS through an Arabic language center called Madras Arabic College, later renamed Kovai Arabic College, in Coimbatore.

Role of the Accused

Jameel Basha was the patron and chief mentor, guiding the establishment of Arabic language centers at the district level. Mohammed Hussain and Irshath set up the center in Coimbatore. Social media and classroom sessions were used to radicalize youth, with Basha’s sermons being shown to students.
