NIA Arrests Key Suspect Girish Barua in Assam IED Case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Girish Barua, also known as Gautam Baruah, a key suspect in a case involving the planting of IEDs by the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in Assam. Barua was captured on the outskirts of Bengaluru, where he was hiding.

The case was registered by the NIA in September and involves the placement of explosive devices across Assam by the banned terrorist organization ULFA (I) as part of an armed protest against India’s Independence Day celebrations.

According to the NIA, Barua was part of a group of ULFA (I) operatives that placed IEDs in North Lakhimpur district in Assam under the direction of the top leadership of the outfit. Barua was presented before the Special NIA Court in Bengaluru on September 25, and the court ordered his transit remand and production before the NIA Special Court in Assam, Guwahati. Investigations in the case are ongoing.
