NHRC Investigates Tragic Incident in West Delhi Park

A tragic incident occurred in a park in West Delhi’s Moti Nagar on October 13, 2024, when a four-year-old boy lost his life after a piece of gym equipment fell on him. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken notice of this incident, which reportedly happened due to loose nuts and bolts on the equipment.

The NHRC has expressed concern over the potential human rights violation due to alleged negligence in maintaining the park’s equipment. This incident has raised questions about the safety of equipment in other public parks managed by local government bodies in Delhi.

In response, the NHRC has issued notices to several authorities, including the Chief Secretary of the Government of NCT of Delhi, the Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Secretary of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). These authorities are required to submit a detailed report within four weeks, addressing whether any compensation has been provided to the affected family and the current status of maintenance and safety audits of park equipment.

Additionally, the NHRC has requested comments from the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, regarding the police investigation into the incident.
