NHRC Investigates Beating of Couple in West Bengal

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken notice of a reported incident where a couple was beaten in public by a group allegedly linked to a political party in Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal. The incident, which was discussed in a village meeting, was captured in a viral video showing the main perpetrator severely beating the couple while villagers watched.

The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, West Bengal, requesting a detailed report within one week. This report should include the status of the police investigation, the health of the victims, and any medical treatment provided. The NHRC also seeks information on steps taken by the state government to prevent such human rights violations in the future.

Given the gravity of the issue, the NHRC has dispatched a team led by a Senior Superintendent of Police to conduct an on-the-spot investigation. The NHRC has expressed concern that this incident is not isolated, citing similar cases of violence and abuse in West Bengal, including a woman being beaten in Cooch Behar and incidents of sexual abuse in North 24 Parganas.
