New Criminal Laws Explained at ‘Vartalap’ Workshop in Shimla
On June 26, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting organized a workshop called ‘Vartalap’ in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The event aimed to help the media understand three new criminal laws: Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, which will take effect on July 1, 2024.
Key Highlights
The Chief Guest, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Abhishek Trivedi, explained that all cases registered from midnight on July 1, 2024, will follow the new laws. He mentioned that extensive training is being provided to officials at all levels, including judicial, forensic, and prison officers.
Technological Advancements
ADGP Trivedi highlighted that the new laws emphasize technology, such as e-FIRs and mobile applications. Any seizure will now require videography. He also introduced a free app called Sankalan, developed by the National Crime Records Bureau, to help people understand the changes in the laws.
Public Awareness
Trivedi stressed the importance of public awareness, noting that everyone should learn about the new laws and spread the word. He mentioned that the Bureau of Police Research and Development has made educational videos available.
