NESO Urges Amit Shah to Prevent Illegal Migration from Bangladesh to North East India
The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take action to prevent illegal migration from Bangladesh into the North Eastern states of India. Due to ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, NESO is concerned about the potential influx of illegal immigrants.
Concerns Raised by NESO
In a letter to Amit Shah, NESO emphasized the need for strict border control between North East India and Bangladesh. They highlighted the historical context of illegal migration during the partition in 1947 and the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, which led to significant demographic changes in the region.
Impact on Indigenous Communities
NESO pointed out that the illegal migration has caused economic competition, cultural assimilation, and distrust between the indigenous communities and the migrants. They mentioned that the indigenous populations are small and have been overwhelmed by the influx of illegal immigrants, leading to land grabbing and marginalization.
Specific Regional Concerns
Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh have been particularly affected by illegal migration. Tripura’s native tribal population has been reduced to 30% due to mass migration, and Assam experienced a six-year-long movement resulting in the Assam Accord, which aimed to deport illegal immigrants.
NESO’s Appeal
NESO has urged the Indian government to ensure that no illegal immigrants enter the North Eastern states and that no Bangladeshi should be granted asylum or rehabilitation in the region. They seek immediate intervention to safeguard the indigenous people of North East India.
