Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal has arrived in New Delhi to participate in the BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers’ Retreat, scheduled for July 11-12, 2024. The retreat aims to enhance regional cooperation among the BIMSTEC member states, which include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

According to a press release from Nepal’s foreign ministry, Lamsal is leading a Nepali delegation to the event. During her visit, she will also meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with other BIMSTEC delegates.

The retreat, hosted by India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, will provide an opportunity for the foreign ministers to discuss ways to broaden and deepen cooperation in various sectors such as security, connectivity, trade, and investment, as well as people-to-people contacts in the Bay of Bengal region.

The first BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers’ Retreat was held in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 17, 2023. BIMSTEC, which stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, brings together seven countries from South and Southeast Asia for multifaceted cooperation.
