Nepal’s Government Collapses as CPN-UML Ministers Resign

In Kathmandu, Nepal, the government led by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, has collapsed after a major political shift. The Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), a key ally, withdrew its support and all eight of its ministers resigned.

Political Drama Unfolds

The CPN-UML had given Prime Minister Dahal a 24-hour ultimatum to step down, calling it a ‘respectful exit.’ When Dahal did not resign, the ministers submitted their resignations at his residence in Baluwatar.

New Government Formation

The CPN-UML and Nepali Congress have agreed to form a new government. KP Sharma Oli from CPN-UML will lead for a year and a half, followed by former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba from Nepali Congress for the remaining term.

Trust Vote and Agreement

Dahal has decided to face a trust vote in Parliament within 30 days. Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has endorsed the new coalition agreement, which includes plans to amend the constitution and improve governance.

Next Steps

A committee led by former Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha will suggest amendments to the election procedures and the constitution. The Vice President will become the chairman of the National Assembly. Leaders have informed President Ram Chandra Paudel about the new coalition and the activation of Section 76 (2) to form a new government if Dahal fails the trust vote.
