Nepali Lawmakers Criticize Chinese Ambassador Chen Song’s Remarks on Trishuli River Search Operation
Nepali lawmakers have raised objections to the remarks made by Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, regarding the ongoing search operation in the Trishuli River. The search is for two passenger buses that were washed away by a mudslide on July 12, carrying 65 passengers. Only three passengers managed to escape, and the search for the remaining passengers and buses continues.
During the search, a 19-kilogram magnet brought by Indian specialists was lost in the river. Chen Song shared a news link on X, stating, ‘Find the magnet then,’ which many found offensive. Abdul Khan, a former minister and lawmaker from the Janamat Party, called the comment inappropriate and offensive to grieving families. He urged the Nepali government to take action.
Another lawmaker, Sarbendra Nath Shukla from the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, also criticized the remarks, calling them ‘irrational’ and ‘unfortunate.’ He emphasized that a good friend of Nepal would not make fun of the nation’s sorrow. Nepali Congress lawmaker Ramhari Khatiwada also called for the Foreign Ministry to summon Chen Song for an explanation.
The search operation involves over 200 security personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force. So far, about two dozen bodies have been found, and 17 people have been identified. The whereabouts of the two buses and 37 passengers remain unknown.
