Nepal Landslide: 14 Bodies Recovered, Schools Closed Amid Ongoing Rain Disaster
Kathmandu, Nepal – On Saturday, Nepal Police recovered 14 bodies from two vehicles buried by a landslide along the Prithvi Highway in the Dhading district. The bodies were found after police teams from Kathmandu and Dhading removed the debris late in the evening.
Senior Superintendent of Police Basant Rajoure confirmed that the search operation is ongoing, and the death toll may rise as more vehicles are believed to be buried under the debris. Five bodies were recovered from a microbus, while nine were found in another bus, the registration of which is yet to be identified.
The landslide has blocked a key entry point into the valley, affecting around half a dozen vehicles. In response to the disaster, the Nepal government has postponed all ongoing exams and closed schools across the nation. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology issued a notice to halt classes until Tuesday.
Education Minister Bidhya Bhattarai stated that the decision was made to ensure the safety of students who have to travel through disaster-hit zones. The Ministry has also given local authorities the power to decide when to resume classes based on the damage and viability of running the schools. Ongoing exams have been halted until further notice.
In the past 24 hours, 66 people have died in Nepal due to the rain-induced disaster caused by a climatic effect affecting the entire nation.
