Nepal Condemns Attacks on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
The government of Nepal has expressed strong disapproval of the recent attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers. In a statement shared on social media, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for an immediate cessation of these actions and demanded a thorough investigation.
UNIFIL was established by the United Nations Security Council in March 1978 to help restore peace and security in Lebanon. Currently, the force comprises over 10,000 personnel deployed on the ground.
Following the attacks, a joint statement was released by 34 countries contributing to UNIFIL, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cambodia, France, Hungary, Italy, and Korea. The statement highlighted the critical role of UNIFIL in the region’s escalating situation.
The member countries urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect UNIFIL’s presence and ensure the safety and security of its personnel. They reaffirmed their support for UNIFIL’s mission to stabilize and bring lasting peace to South Lebanon and the Middle East, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
The statement also called for adherence to international law, particularly the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.
