Nepal Air Crash: Tribhuvan Airport Tragedy and Victim Identification

Three days after a tragic air crash at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepali authorities have started handing over the bodies of the victims to their families. The crash, which occurred on July 24, involved a Saurya Airlines aircraft bound for Pokhara and resulted in the deaths of 18 people.

Out of the 18 bodies, five were handed over to the families for cremation from the morgue of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) after completing the autopsy. The identities of the victims were established using Disaster Victim Identification (DVI). Families and relatives of those who died received the bodies after a long wait and completing the necessary paperwork.

A total of 25 doctors were stationed at the mortuary of TUTH to expedite the process. Before the formal handover, authorities called family members of the victims for identification. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Amar Thapa, stated, “A total of 5 bodies has been handed over to the respective families for cremation. Uddav Puri, Ashmin Niraula, Shyam Bindukar, Sushant Katuwal, and Rajaram Acharya’s bodies were received by the family members today. More bodies will be handed over tomorrow.”

The crash occurred when the CRJ7 (Reg-9NAME) of Saurya Airlines took off from Kathmandu at 11:11 am local time and crashed on the east side of the runway. The fire was brought under control, and rescue work started immediately. The lone survivor of the crash is the pilot, who was taken to the hospital. The plane was only carrying technical staff of the airline, with no passengers on board.
