Neeraj Chopra, the defending Olympic champion and World Championships gold medalist, made a huge throw of 89.34 meters in Group B of the men’s javelin throw qualification round at the Paris Olympics. This throw, his best of the season, secured his place in the finals, which will be held on Thursday at 11:55 pm IST. Neeraj’s throw was his second-best ever, with his top throw being 89.94 meters at the Stockholm Diamond League 2022.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, one of Neeraj’s closest rivals, also qualified for the finals with his season-best throw of 86.59 meters. Arshad and Neeraj have a healthy rivalry, with Neeraj leading their head-to-head record 9-0. However, Arshad’s best throw of 90.18 meters at the 2022 Commonwealth Games surpasses Neeraj’s top effort.

Asian Games silver medalist Kishore Jena finished ninth in Group A of the men’s javelin throw qualification round, failing to advance to the medal round. His best attempt was 80.73 meters, which placed him ninth. Only four competitors from Group A advanced to the medal round. To advance, athletes need to be among the top 12 best across both groups A and B.
