NCW and NLUJA Host Consultation in Guwahati to Strengthen Cyber Laws for Women
The National Commission for Women (NCW), in partnership with the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJA), organized the first Regional Law Review Consultation for 2024-25. The event, held in Guwahati, focused on “Cyber Laws Affecting Women” and gathered over 40 legal experts from the northeastern states to discuss necessary amendments to cyber laws impacting women.
Under Section 10(1)(d) of the NCW Act, 1992, the NCW reviews laws related to women when statutory gaps are identified. For 2024-25, “Cyber Laws Affecting Women” is a key topic. Eight consultations will occur from October 26 to December 7, 2024, with various law colleges and universities across India.
The consultations aim to bring together judges, senior advocates, police officers, government officials, academicians, civil society members, and victims to address gaps in current laws. Discussions included the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and proposed amendments to the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, and relevant sections of the POSH Act. Topics like cyberstalking, bullying, impersonation, identity theft, and deepfakes were discussed.
Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan, former judge of the Guwahati High Court, emphasized the need for synergy between legislation and enforcement. Prof (Dr) Indrajit Dube, Vice-Chancellor of NLU Meghalaya, highlighted systemic issues in law enforcement and advocated for digital literacy and accountability. Dr Arjun Chetri from the North Eastern Police Academy discussed AI-driven cybercrimes and the need for stringent laws.
NCW representatives, including A Asholi Chalai and Ms. Bhavika Sharma, participated. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Nandarani Choudhury from NLUJA, Assam.
