NCRTC Unveils Futuristic Meerut Metro

On September 7, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) showcased the advanced features of the Meerut Metro at the RRTS Depot in Duhai, Ghaziabad. This new metro system aims to transform transportation in Meerut, providing a safe, fast, and modern way for residents to travel.

Key Features and Benefits

Shalabh Goel, Managing Director of NCRTC, highlighted that the Meerut Metro will improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and boost economic growth. The metro will operate on the same infrastructure as the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) from Meerut South to Modipuram, allowing seamless travel and significant cost savings.

The Meerut Metro corridor spans 23 km with 13 stations, including 18 km of elevated and 5 km of underground sections. The stations include:

The metro trains are designed for speeds up to 135 km/h and feature energy-efficient, lightweight designs with regenerative braking systems. Each train can carry over 700 passengers, with 173 seated. The trains include modern amenities like air conditioning, luggage racks, USB charging ports, and CCTV cameras.

Safety and Accessibility

Safety is a priority, with platform screen doors, emergency communication systems, and reserved seating for women and senior citizens. The stations and trains are accessible, with space for medical stretchers and wheelchairs.

Under the Make in India initiative, all trainsets are manufactured in India by Alstom in Savli, Gujarat. Five trainsets have been delivered so far.

Prime Minister’s Inauguration

On October 20, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System and flagged off the first Namo Bharat train. The entire RRTS corridor, including the Meerut Metro, is expected to be fully operational by 2025.
