New Delhi, August 20: Priyank Kanungo, Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), spoke about the mishandling of a sexual assault case involving two young girls at a school in Badlapur, Maharashtra. He criticized the school’s insensitive approach and the police’s delay in filing an FIR.

Kanungo stated, “The school’s attitude in this case was insensitive. They tried to suppress the case. The concerned police station did not register an FIR in due time.” He added that a team would be sent to investigate the incident and that the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra had already taken steps to remove the officers involved.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ordered a high-level investigation and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter. Shinde assured that those found guilty would face strict action. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis appointed senior IPS officer Arti Singh to lead the SIT.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray called for strict action against the accused and mentioned the Shakti bill, which aims to protect women and children. He criticized the current government for not passing the bill sooner.

The incident has led to widespread protests, with residents blocking trains and pelting stones at the school. Police used tear gas to control the crowd and arrested those responsible for the violence. Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar confirmed that one suspect had been arrested and promised maximum punishment.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi expressed outrage and urged for the approval of the Maharashtra Shakti Criminal Law to prevent such incidents in the future. She criticized societal attitudes towards women’s safety and called for immediate action.
