Navratri Celebrations at Indore Central Jail
In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, prisoners at the Central Jail are celebrating Navratri with great enthusiasm. The jail administration has organized an event where both male and female prisoners, including those convicted and undertrial, participate in Garba, Dandiya, and tribal dances. This annual tradition brings joy and devotion to the inmates.
Festive Activities
Central Jail Superintendent, Dr. Alka Sonkar, expressed her excitement about the event. She shared, “A very warm wish from all of us for the holy festival of Mata Rani. This time too, during the entire 9 days of Navratri, Garba is being performed by the prisoners, women prisoners and male prisoners in our jail premises because Garba and devotion are considered to be the most powerful medium of worshipping Goddess.”
Dr. Sonkar further explained that the fourth day of celebrations included tribal Garba from Gujarat and Dandiya, along with tribal folk dances performed by male prisoners.
About Navratri
Navratri, meaning ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit, is dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine avatars, known as Navdurga. Celebrated with devotion across India, it includes rituals and prayers honoring the goddess. While there are four Navratris in a year, Chaitra Navratri and Shardiya Navratri are the most widely celebrated.
In North India, the festival features Ramlila performances and concludes with Vijayadashami, marking the triumph of good over evil with the burning of King Ravana’s effigies.
