Navile Annappa, an advocate and former BJP District President of Hassan, emphasized the importance of educating youngsters about the 1975 Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Speaking on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Annappa called it a ‘black day’ and highlighted how it curtailed the rights of Indian citizens, including freedom of speech and media.

Prime Minister Modi also criticized the Congress Party for its actions during the Emergency. He posted on X, stating that the period serves as a reminder of how the Congress Party trampled over the Constitution of India. Modi paid homage to those who resisted the Emergency and condemned the Congress government for disregarding democratic principles to maintain power.

Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu suggested that the history of the Emergency should be included in textbooks to educate students about its impact on India’s democracy. He noted that the Emergency led to political arrests and other controversial actions, affecting many key opposition leaders.

The Emergency, lasting from June 25, 1975, to 1977, is considered one of the most controversial periods in independent India’s history, marked by political arrests, mass forced sterilization, and other repressive measures.
