Naveen Patnaik Elected Chairperson of BJD’s Parliamentary Party
Naveen Patnaik, the former Chief Minister of Odisha, has been unanimously elected as the chairperson of the Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) parliamentary party. This decision was made during the BJD’s Parliamentary Party meeting held on Friday.
Meeting Highlights
After the meeting, BJD MP Sasmit Patra shared that all MPs unanimously elected Naveen Patnaik as the chairperson. Patra quoted Patnaik advising MPs to ‘strongly counter’ the BJP-led central government and to raise issues critical to Odisha.
Patra also alleged that the BJP has neglected the people of Odisha for the past decade.

Another BJD MP, Sulata Deo, emphasized that the BJD has always stood for the people and will continue to fulfill its responsibilities as an opposition party. She mentioned that Patnaik advised them to work for the people and raise Odisha’s issues in Parliament.
BJD’s New Strategy
Earlier, the BJD formed a group of 50 elected members to monitor the performance of the BJP-led Odisha government. The BJD, which has ruled Odisha since 1997, lost the recent state assembly elections, securing only 51 out of 147 seats, while the BJP won 78 seats. In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJD failed to win any of the 21 seats, with the BJP winning 20 and Congress one.
VK Pandian, a former bureaucrat and close aide to Patnaik, has stepped back from active politics following the party’s electoral loss.
