Naveen Patnaik Criticizes Odisha’s New Budget by BJP

Former Odisha Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition, Naveen Patnaik, criticized the BJP’s first budget in the state, calling it a ‘name-changing’ rather than a ‘game-changing’ budget. He claimed that 80% of the schemes were already presented by his BJD government.

The Rs 2.65 lakh crore budget for 2024-25 was presented by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also holds the finance portfolio. The budget exceeded the previous year’s forecast by almost 15%. Majhi proposed spending Rs 33,919 crore on agriculture, which is around 36% higher than the previous year. The budget also includes Rs 1.55 lakh crore for program spending, Rs 97,725 crore for administrative expenditure, and Rs 3,900 crore for disaster risk management funds.

However, BJP leaders praised the budget as historic and people-oriented. Odisha Minister Mukesh Mahaling and Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo both emphasized that the budget aims for the overall development of Odisha, focusing on the poor, women, and youth.
