Naval Science and Technological Laboratory Celebrates 55th Anniversary with Indian Navy

The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) celebrated its 55th Lab Raising Day with great enthusiasm. Established on August 20, 1969, NSTL has grown from 10 staff members to 603 personnel, including 186 scientists. It is a premier lab of the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) focused on underwater weapons and systems.

Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, the Chief Guest, congratulated NSTL for its 55 years of contributions to India’s defense sector. He emphasized the increased responsibility of NSTL, given its products are on the positive indigenous list, and highlighted its close coordination with the Indian Navy.

The event also honored staff who completed 25 years of service and recognized the best library users. Captain AVSN Murty received a prestigious Letter of Appreciation for his work on naval infrared stealth.

On June 5, 2023, NSTL successfully conducted combat trials of the Varunastra Torpedo, developed with Trini Tech Infrastructure India Pvt. Ltd. This technology is now being transferred to the industry partner through a licensing agreement.

Dr. Abraham Varughese, Director of NSTL, highlighted the lab’s evolution and its commitment to meeting the Indian Navy’s requirements with world-class test facilities.
